Current Packaging

Currently, most of the food industry in Nigeria use traditional packaging materials which includes:

Non-biodegradable plastic products such as plastic plates, plastic cups, cutlery, plastic bags, Styrofoam plates, and many more which can take up to 450 to 500 years to decompose.

While these materials are functional, they have raised a lot of environmental concerns and have led to a large rate of customer dissatisfaction.

‍

Why use Sustainable Packaging?

Food Packaging Accounts for the biggest growing sector within the synthetic plastic plastic packaging market domain and the usage of non biodegradable and non compostable materials for the various packaging application have caused a lot of environmental pollution across the country. Sustainable packaging is a vital commitment for any modern food establishment. Its more than a trend, it is responsible business practice.

Food Container made from Sugarcane fiber (Bagasse)

Sugarcane fiber, known as bagasse, is the leftover fibrous part of the sugarcane stalk after juice extraction. It's typically discarded or burned for fuel at sugar mills.

Transforming bagasse into various products, including paper, packaging, cups, and bowls, provides a sustainable use for this renewable, non-edible byproduct of food production.

Producing sugarcane fiber is a simple process:

1.Juice is extracted from harvested sugarcane, leaving         behind only bagasse fibers.

    2. These fibers are blended with water to create a pulp.

    3. Pressure and heat are applied to shape the pulp into        various products.

Sugarcane fiber offers significant environmental benefits. Unlike traditional paper packaging that rely on cutting down millions of trees and use fossil fuel-derived coatings, sugarcane fiber products are more sustainable. They break down faster in landfills, and by reducing the demand for wood, they help combat deforestation, biodiversity loss, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Sugarcane fiber products offer an affordable and versatile alternative to foam and paper packaging. They are heat-resistant (up to 200°F), grease and water-resistant, durable, freezer-safe, and provide excellent insulation for maintaining internal temperatures, which makes it the perfect solution for Iya Basira’s Packaging
